Subsurface tillage boosts yields and cuts costs shown
John Berg reports subsurface tilled ground on a Mt. Vernon farm yielded about 25 percent more than plowed plots last year while planting and field prep costs were roughly 50 cents per acre lower. A 32 bushel per acre top yield occurred on Colby soil, with moisture conserved and erosion reduced. Berg notes deeper tillage reduces weed growth and aids moisture retention for future crops.
