Liquor Penalty Bill Advances in Senate Fight

Washington Feb 20 The Jones bill to boost penalties for prohibition violations clears the senate by 65 to 18 and goes to the house as lawmakers near adjournment. It raises first offense fines to 19 000 or five years in prison with similar harsh terms for repeat offenders. Proponents say aimed at big bootleggers. opponents voice strong objections including Senator Bruce who cursed the bill as retirement nears. The measure has the support of the prohibition bureau and Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt of the Justice Department.

Hoover to See Coolidge at 3 P M

President elect Hoover arranged a White House meeting for 3 p m with Coolidge to discuss a possible special session and tariff revision timing. Alphomega first to print college paper on cornstalk pulp

Alphomega the regular Tuesday edition of the Alphamega at Huron college appeared on cornstalk paper making it likely the first college newspaper to use the material. The issue includes statements from the college president and publisher about waste reduction advances and a memorial edition honoring Prof. Feterson. Washington Feb 20 Two huge consolidation plans are filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission. Baltimore & Ohio seeks approval to expand by acquiring many trunk lines while the Van Sweringen interests pursue a sweeping grouping of Chesapeake and Ohio and multiple affiliated lines. The proposals outline a 12 000 mile system with a capital of about 2 500 000 000 and barge entries for additional rail properties.

Five Killed and 200 Hurt in Ill Mine Train Wreck

Five miners died and about 200 were injured when a Feoria Terminal railway train carrying 900 miners overturned on a 25 foot embankment near Morris Illinois. One car caught fire from an overturned stove but the fire was extinguished. the incident left many seriously hurt and potential fatalities looming.

Miners Train Wreck Near Crescent Coal Mines

An accident aboard miners train No. 1 en route to Crescent coal mines fifteen miles south left a miner fatally burned after a fall across the stove. Engineer F O Fisher stopped the engine and alerted Hollis for aid as wreckage scattered. Dozens of wives and children rushed to the scene amid freezing weather, ambulances, doctors, and hospital staff arriving from Peoria and Matinville.

House Passes Bill Extending Radio Commission Powers

Washington February 20 without a record vote the house passed the White bill to extend for a year the administrative powers of the radio commission. The measure goes to the senate.
