An increase in corn acreage is expected by about 2 percent, with yields about 5 percent higher than 1929, per the Extension Service Farm Economics and Federal Agricultural Statistician. Prices may be below 1928 and 1923, though cash corn prices could rise between January 1930 and crop prospects. Demand for feeding will be lower, hog numbers smaller, and dairy product prices weaker, while cow and beef cattle on farms are up about 3 percent.

Demonstration Farm Yields Six Dollars An Acre
Pierre February report on the Webber Demonstration farm fifteen miles northeast of Pierre shows a rental to the owner of a little over six dollars an acre for the past two seasons on 480 acres. Webber, a Minneapolis capitalist, owns wild land in the region and was urged by the Pierre commercial club to place water and land improvements to prove what could be achieved under favorable conditions. The land in its wild state was worth about twenty dollars an acre. McGinnis receives twenty five percent of receipts. The two seasons are viewed as favorable, yet the net return to the owner is about six percent per year on total investment.

Paul Lee Pioneer Buried in Howard Funeral Services Held
Special funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Bethany Church for Paul Lee, a pioneer resident who died Sunday morning February 9 at his son Martinee’s home after a lingering illness. He was buried in Reliview cemetery and survived by his widow Mathys Lee, three sons Martin, Lyle, and Palmer, and other relatives. Lee homesteaded and lived a pioneer life in the area, enduring hard work and a simple agricultural routine.
