Legislature Tackles Three Big Dakota Farm Issues
In the South Dakota legislature the month opened with three major farm questions. A Republican secretary of agriculture faced delay as Gov Warren Green sought farm grants for a dirt farmer. Proposals to alter or scrap county extension work at South Dakota State College sparked disputes among farm groups. Budget cuts eyed county agent supervision and Young Citizens league funding. A Brookings extension bill aims to elect county board members to oversee extension work, potentially widening county participation but facing resistance from farm bureaus. Representative Adolph Ludwig cited economy as the motive for shifting extension oversight.
