Communal Hutterite Roots Linked to 15th Century Faith
Professor L J Deets of the University of South Dakota spoke before the American Sociological Society in Cleveland tracing the Hutterische Bruder communities as sectarian communism dating from 1528 Moravia to Russia and South Dakota. He said their wealth sharing stemmed from religion, not economics, and noted the communities have persisted 400 years with 32 colonies, 4 in South Dakota and 28 in Canada. The talk highlighted religion as the controlling factor in the Hutterites and contrasted with modern individualism. In Highmore a local gas war emerged with WNAX station price cuts and independent dealers matching 5¢ per gallon.
