An editor's note explains how recent Congressional changes in the old age and survivors insurance provisions apply to workers. The Social Security Board’s field office manager for the area has prepared guidance for readers of The Evening Huronite.
The article explains revised rules for survivors benefits where an insured worker who supports a parent dies. If a single parent over 65 survives with no widow or unmarried child, they may receive monthly benefits after filing within two years. When both parents are supported, each gets half the worker’s basic monthly benefit. An example shows a stenographer earning $25 monthly benefits $12.50 per parent after 65, ongoing for life. If neither wife nor child survives, a lump-sum six times the basic benefit may be paid to a parent under 65 or to another relative who paid funeral expenses, limited to actual expenditures.
