The ceremony, first pope visit to the Italian ruler in 70 years, followed a reciprocal royal visit a week earlier and foreshadowed discussions with Premier Mussolini. Thousands lined streets as rain drenched the procession, while Vatican and Italian leaders avoided tying the moment to war or peace issues. The Lateran Accords and mutual respect framed the exchange as a step toward ongoing accord between church and state.
