Level Of Farm Prices Slumps In Mid December Review

Pierre, Dec. 21 The mid-December general level of farm prices was slightly lower than a month earlier, per the federal bureau of agricultural economics. Prices for cotton, corn, and most livestock fell further, offset by seasonal gains in dairy and poultry products and some fruits and vegetables. The index on Nov. 15 stood at 54 percent of the 1913-14 average, down from the prior month, with barley and sheep showing small advances and several major products at their lowest levels in 24 years. The goods farmers buy valued at 51 percent of prewar average on Nov. 15, little changed from October, with a June low around 47. The July–Sept rise proved temporary, and the recent decline stems from lower farm and food prices, while some items rebounded briefly in early November before slipping again by December.
