Genevieve Howe to Study in Paris in 1934

Vermillion report from December 16 notes Genevieve Howe of Deadwood South Dakota, now at Columbia University, chosen as one of ten American exchange students to study in Paris next semester. Howe earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota in 1931, was a Mortar Board member, and received the Dakota Alumni prize for scholarly merit and integrity.

Dr. Floyd Coslett, superintendent of the sanatorium for tuberculosis, says about five thousand dollars are needed in 1934 to care for tuberculosis patients in South Dakota. He notes Christmas seals don’t finance hospitalization but are the best defense against larger public funding needs, preventing tuberculosis.

Veterinary Group Elects Officers in South Dakota

Sixty South Dakota Veterinary Medical association officers were chosen at the convention with Dr. H. J. McCauley of Beresford named president succeeding Dr. Garle B. Lenker. Dr. Gladstone Elliott of Aberdeen was elected vice president and Dr. George E. Mejody of Haven re elected secretary for the sixth time. The group voted to affiliate with the American Veterinary Medical Association led by Dr. C. P. Fitch of Minneapolis as AVMA president. Speakers included Dr. Frank Breed of Lincoln and Dr. E. D. Sadler of Wagner among others.

Horse Stealing Leads to Six-Year Penalty

Circuit Judge WF Eddy on Thursday sentenced Johnny Smoky Johnson to six years in the state penitentiary after a circuit court jury convicted him on five counts of horse stealing. R F Drewry, assistant attorney general, aided State's Attorney Harry Wilmersen in the prosecution.

Eastern Enrollment Stays Roughly Steady at Eastern State

Madison, Dec. 16 The winter term enrollment at Eastern State normal school began November 27 with 221 students, per registrar Miss Alice Montgomery. Fifteen fall quarter registrants did not re enroll, four new students joined, six dropouts completed the advanced diploma, and one has taken a teaching position.

Redfield DeMolays Hold Initiation Ceremony

The Henry Sadler chapter of the Order of DeMolay held initiation at the Temple. Robert Keagy received the first degree while Hugh Elehoitz and Milford Meise earned the second degree. The team will confer a DeMolay degree at Huron on December 29 at the state meet. The meeting attracted members from Tulare Ashton and Redfield. A. J. Ku bus heads the local chapter.

Marjorie Burns Named Coyote Yearbook Editor

Marjorie Burns of Huron has been appointed associate editor of the 1934 Coyote, the University of South Dakota yearbook. A junior in arts and sciences, she previously edited Huron high school’s yearbook and is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She belongs to Guidon and Alpha Chi Alpha and serves as campus editor of the Volante.

Doctor Moves Hitchcock to Lloyd Anderson Residence

Hitchcock Legion Auxiliary Meets Christmas Charities

The Hitchcock Legion Auxiliary met with 18 members and 1 visitor Mrs. Clara Zachritz of Faulkton. Mrs. T. E. Sutter reported on the Redfield district meeting December 5. Special numbers included a Mildred Riemath solo and a Fem Rodman reading. A Chicago convention report by Mrs. Zachritz was read. The group voted to send 150 to the Child Welfare board and 741 from the traveling shirt lunch to the Soldier's Home. Social committee included Mrs. Anna Shaw Grace Kingdon and Mrs. T. E. Sutter.

Groton High Girls Glee Club Performs Sunday Service

The Groton High School Girls Glee Club directed by Miss Esither Rupnel sang two pieces at Presbyterian week services. Adeste Fideles, from a 13th century Italian hymn, and The Heavens Re sound arranged from Beethoven, showed creditable work by the group.

Gravel pits spotted near Ree Heights road work

Ree Heights dispatch notes road crews testing and uncovering gravel to be used on area roads. Workers report a sizable quantity found near farms and adjacent locations as gravel deposits are inspected for future paving and maintenance.

The junior class of Iroquois high school is preparing a play to be staged Saturday evening December 18 at the opera house. A Bird in a Cage is the title with special numbers between acts and the orchestra providing several selections.

The Yale school board met with three of five members present and announced the holiday vacation will run from December 22 to January 2.

Holiday Events Crowd Eastern State Normal This Week

Madison South Dakota Eastern State Normal School hosts a busy holiday schedule before Christmas vacation starting December 22. Dramatics classes staged two one act plays The Londonderry Air and Lavender and Hed Pepper. Faculty hosts a dinner bridge party and East Hall hosts the all school Christmas party. The freshman class acts 25 hosts at the December 18 program by Mrs Esther Howard. An oratorical contest will select Eastern’s representative for the state meet. Two hundred tempus school children present a nativity play December 21. Flandreau Eagles meet the Trojans December 21, with Madison High facing Vermillion, and a Brookings game against State College on December 16. Christmas vacation runs December 22 at four o’clock until January 8 at nine o’clock.

Wilcox Presides At Church Conference In Iroquois

Dr and Mrs Wilcox of Huron attended the Ladies Aid meeting at the parsonage. Mr Wilcox spoke to the gathering. A committee served refreshments to about 1040 people. In the evening Dr Wilcox led the first quarterly conference of the year with reports from several committees.

College Paper Is Financed by Ads

Merchants in Mitchell will place advertisements on the campus bulletin board in front of College hall at Wesleyan university to finance the 1935 Tumbleweed. Ads will be updated during the school year and seen daily by students. Dwight Schwab appointed Evelyn Lifschultz head of the Tumbleweed advertising, noting her competence from last year’s Mitchell high school annual.
