Indians Win In Federal Action
Indians of the Sioux nation across North Dakota South Dakota Nebraska and Montana won a federal court judgment for 5454893 dollars against the United States subject to deductions for expenditures made for the Indians over the last four decades. The Court of Claims held the government obligated for lands valued at over five million four hundred fifty thousand dollars under the 1889 act with adjustments for acreage and offsets to be determined in further proceedings. The case stems from a 1877 agreement selling surplus lands for homesteading and placing proceeds in a fund, which Indians contend was never fully set up though expenditures exceeded the fund’s obligations.
