Deadlock Persists In Major League Draft Dispute
InMontreal on December 4, five minor leagues and the major/major-league factions remained at a standstill over the draft issue. The majors demand the right to draft or select at a fixed price from non-draft leagues, including young stars not yet in the big leagues. They severed relations from December 1, threatening disruption. The five leagues offered to resume talks within 15 days if the majors drop the severance. Officials Hedler and Barnard signaled little chance of an amicable settlement before next week’s joint meeting, prompting non-major leagues to plan independent action. The central question is access to first-grade players in sufficient numbers, with no immediate peace in sight.
