Poll Tax States Favor Voting Restriction In Survey
In eight southern states poll taxes remain a barrier to voting with most regular voters preferring to retain the requirement. The Institute survey shows little change since 1941, with Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas maintaining the tax. The Tennessee law was briefly repealed but court action kept it in effect.
