Ottawa reports Lord Louis Mountbatten named supreme Allied commander in Southeast Asia. The post will coordinate operations aimed at defeating Japan from India and Ceylon, with Roosevelt and Churchill eyeing China aid and broader war plans.
Lord Louis Mountbatten, called a zebra of sea land and air service, becomes supreme Allied commander in Southeast Asia. He will helm American Chinese British Canadian Indian forces, with planning set in Quebec and a focus on rapid support to China and intensified amphibious operations.
Zurich dispatch reported by Tass says Adolf Hitler assigned Reich Administrator Heinrich Himmler control of the ministry of justice and all judicial bodies. Himmler also purged the interior ministry, dismissing over 40 officials, while being named interior minister and chief of the Reich administration.

Tokyo announced via AP broadcast that about 1500 Americans and Chileans will be included in the second exchange of American and Japanese nationals. The plan calls for the exchange to take place in the second week of October at Moramugao Portuguese India. A Japanese ship carrying internees will depart a Japanese harbor between September 10 and 20, toward destinations in Japan China and Southeast Asia.
The Davison County gas panel revoked Earth Danielson of Mitchells A and B ration books for 60 days after a municipal court conviction for speeding 35 mph. The action follows the incident of the speeding violation. Count Alessandro Frontoni, former Fascist Party director, reportedly killed himself in Rome.
