De Smet School Adds Home Economics Course for New Year
De Smet High School will offer an extra course this year, adding a home economics program as a Smith Hughes department. The faculty includes four men and two women, with L Vernon Caine as superintendent and Francis Holgate returning as coach. New staff include Miss Exams Henson English, Lovisa Bruhn for commercial subjects and principal duties, Victor Bauman teaching mathematics, and Miss Ella Bang for home economics. Lane Farm Home Damaged By Fire Near Lane
The Welter family home south of Lane burned early Wednesday. Mrs Welter suffered burns and shock and was treated at Alpena. Neighbors helped as porch and kitchen were destroyed, water supply failed, and most rooms were badly damaged though two rooms remained fair. Insurance partially covered the loss.

Mrs Ravenscroft hosts Wayland Air Society gathering with ten members and three guests. Chairmen Paulson and Brown were absent due to threshing season. Catherima Winegar led business while contests awarded to Cora Anderson Marion House and Mrs Anderson. Beverly Ravenscroft and Lillian Major presented piano duets.

Stearns to Operate De Smet Restaurant Opening
De Smet is set to replace a closed Cummins Building restaurant with E F Stearns as manager, moving from the Salem depot. Stearns will also operate the Brookings depot lunch, with Mrs Stearns in charge there. Town officials were arranging plans during today’s visit. Wyatt trip plans include Vanderz Jefferies and families leaving Friday to Wyoming. Consumption of candy in the United States rises with May chocolate sales up 14 percent year over year.
