Roosevelt Steps Into Senate House Cotton Wheat Fight
President Roosevelt intervened in the Senate House clash over deficit financing and cotton and wheat loan terms. Senate leaders recessed for negotiations as House members, after talks with the President, resisted amending the deficiency bill to set 12 cents a pound on cotton and about 90 cents a bushel on wheat. The White House offered no clear stance, with plans and possible outcomes debated among Buchanan, Byrnes, Robinson, Burns, and other leaders as adjournment loomed and the social security funding remained tied to farm program provisions.
