Brookings Aug 17. High turnover adds 18 new staff at State college led by Captain W E Smith in the military department. New appointees include Alta R. Dig For Water But Find Vein Of Coal
Aug. 17 Miller reports digging a well on Ventohnu farm eighteen miles north of Miller. While drilling for water, a vein of lignite coal was struck about eight feet thick at a depth of 85 feet. The discovery proves water flow not guaranteed by digging alone.

Rattlesnake Found In Sack Of Spuds
Midland August 17 a large rattlesnake was found resting on potatoes in a sack received by a Midland general store from a Pierre wholesale house. The snake showed it had been roughly handled during transport, most rattles missing, and attacked when released. It was killed as it likely crawled into the sack during filling.
