Sand Cherry Raised On Farm At Plerre South Dakota
Plerre Aug 17. Sand cherry farms are rare in South Dakota yet a five acre plantation near Plerre grows this crop. Prof N B Hansen head of horticulture at State College leads a long term program to tame the sand cherry, breeding larger fruit with smaller pits and better flavor. He has cross bred with Japanese plum and Siberian pear efforts now yielding Clay cherry and other hybrids. Hansen travels between the Plerre and Watertown plantations to monitor progress, and also develops alfalfa hybrids and Troso millet for upland zones. He cites a record Troso yield of up to 2a.300 fold in 60 days.
