Pierre Aug 1947 Jim Conway a 16 year old Sioux Falls youth won the South Dakota Ford Gond Drivers League contest and will receive a special Youth 3 license plate for a national competition in New York late this month. Secretary Olive Rings tad will issue the plate without a county code showing he represents the state. The plate will bear the number 5900. Conway is eligible for a $5000 prize and a scholarship.

Brookings Aug 15 Over 42,000 people moved from South Dakota farms in the 1920 1940 decade according to W F Kumlien. Preliminary census data show 63 counties gained or lost population differently with Black Hills counties adding residents. Potter County Fair will run August 19 20 21 at Gettysburg with revival this year. The exhibit building is under repairs and will soon be ready. 4-H clubs will present a play and Indian exhibits will be on display. Extension clubs arranged a program The Songs We Sing. A carnival company will be present and there will be daily dances at the American Legion Hall with Pierre Capitol fans providing music.

Miller, Aug. 15 Special. A large number of Miller Band members will attend summer band camps. Francis Schwartz has joined Vandercock School of Music at Spearfish for two weeks. About 13 youths will attend St. Lawrence Band Camp in St. Lawrence next week. The Miller Band will skip its Aug. 22 concert, while the St. Lawrence group will give a concert on Miller auditorium lawn Aug. 23. The band also plans to perform on Governors Day at the State Fair in Huron.

Paving contract awarded to Sioux Falls firm links Sioux Falls
Pierre Aug 15 The state highway paving contract for 10,099 miles of Highway 38 between Sioux Falls and northwest lows was awarded to C A Wagner Construction Co of Sioux Falls for 275,288 25 dollars. Bids opened Tuesday and approval by federal roads administration followed. The firm will use state cement and crush rock. The commission also awarded Summit Construction Co Rapid City 30,227 34 dollars for base course and oil surfacing 4,013 miles of US 14 and 16 east and west of the Cheyenne River near Wasta in Pennington County.
