July 1929 District Farm and Business Outlook Report

The Minneapolis Federal Reserve preliminary summary shows July 1929 district business outpaced July 1928 with farm income from cash crops and hogs more than doubling year over year due to higher grain prices larger marketings and heavier hog weights. Debits and the country clearings index rose while some sectors like department stores and flour shipments fell. Prices for several commodities increased month to month with dairies slightly higher in June and farm product values listed for July 1929 and July 1928 across bread wheat durum wheat rye flax Hogs and Dairy products.

Ft. Pierre Realtors Company Is Formed

Articles of incorporation filed in Pierre establish the Wischer company of Ft. Pierre as a general real estate and development firm with capital stock of 250 000. Incorporators Anton S. Fischer Frank F. Fischer and Carl T. Fischer, all of Ft. Pierre, listed on the document.

Farm ice house outmoded by electric refrigeration say farm study

Brookings Aug 115 Researchers from State College report electric refrigerators on 17 farms along the Renner electric line cut costs and heat demand. The study finds average yearly use about 379 kWh costing 11.91 dollars per owner, with winter costs around 6.57 dollars, and humid units averaging 42.46 degrees Fahrenheit. The bulletin suggests rural electrification makes refrigerators cheaper than ice houses and a future farm necessity.

Plays Over Radio Is United With Daughters

Alfred Ames of Grand Rapids Michigan was reunited with his daughters Mrs Maud Champlin and Mrs Ruby Jackson after 50 years. A Sears Roebuck old time fiddlers contest won him a communication that sparked the reunion held July 1. Champlin had not seen her father since she was 15 months old when they lived in Sioux City Iowa. He now 82 enjoys good health and the daughters plan to move him to Grand Rapids for a new home.

Attorney General Clarifies South Dakota Pass Law Change

Sharpe explains revised 1929 intrastate pass law in South Dakota. He states the amendment omits prohibition on accepting or using passes for travel wholly within the state. The opinion, issued after inquiry from Chamberlain’s state attorney, addresses section 5 and public officer use of passes.

Redelm Claim Deepest Oil Well In South Dakota

Aug 15 Redelm reports a South Dakota oil well as the deepest yet drilled in the state at a depth between 3300 and 3500 feet. Early drilling showed rapid progress of about three feet per hour but the pace has slowed due to unusually hard rock. The contractor still has about 700 feet of piping on hand and indicates more piping remains beyond that.

Memorial Service Honors Preacher Smith in Black Hills

Lead Aug 15 The memory of Rev Henry Weston Smith known as Preacher Smith a famed figure of 1876 gold rush days was honored at a monument north of Deadwood. About 16 people attended the service presided by Rev W E Hartting with participation from Rev A G Campbell and other Black Hills Methodist pastors.

Wind Cave Postoffice Draws Visitors Names

In Wind Cave South Dakota visitors leave names and addresses inside a cavern nicknamed the postoffice near a 200 foot underground chamber. The practice yields paper scraps stuffed in rock formations, showing names from every state and foreign countries across hundreds of little rock boxes.

Vermillion Melon King Forecasts Bumper Crop

Vermillion reports J. R. Dunlap, melon king, says last week's rain guarantees the largest melon crop yet. He plans to begin harvesting musk melons mid month with 50,000 dozen or more than 500,000 melons to market, then about August 25 he will ship 200,000 watermelons.

In Wayland on August 15 a number of scarlet fever cases were reported in the vicinity. The Wald family is not currently in serious condition.

Start Surveying New Road In Black Hills

State highway engineers under BR C Spitzer began a survey for a federal and state aid surfaced highway from Hull City to Rapid City via Keystone. Seven-man party started Hill City survey on a preliminary plan by J H Lake and R Co Livingston. Federal checks may delay progress. under federal supervision the route would resemble the Black Hills main trunk lines.

South Dakota to launch state youth newspaper

A new four page monthly state paper for young citizens will begin in September with 5000 copies mailed to county and league officials. Aleen Erickson will edit the publication featuring profiles of Governor Wed Bulow and Lt Governor John T Grigsby with statewide news sourced from county papers.

Girl Recovering After Appendix Operation

Velma Gilland six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Casper Gilland is recovering satisfactorily from an operation for a ruptured appendix. The girl was operated on in Juron during Operation Wayland on August 15.
