Roosevelt orders Cuban destroyers to protect Americans

President Roosevelt authorizes two destroyers to Havana and one to Manzanillo to safeguard American lives in Cuba amid unrest. Two Negroes Are Lynched In South

TUSCALOOSA ALA Aug 14 07 One of three negroes spirited away by a lynching party was missing today or the bodies of the other two companions were found riddled by bullets. Dan Pippen Elmore Clark and A T Harden had been indicted for killing Miss Vaudine Maddox white whose battered body was found in a ravine. Sheriff Shamblin said the prisoners were removed to Birmingham for safekeeping and the party was halted near the Jefferson county line by armed men who seized them. Later the bodies of Pippen and Harden were found near Blocton. Governor Miller ordered a grand jury investigation. International Labor Defense criticized the case. Lawyers for the LL D had sought to represent Pippen but were ruled out. Sheriff Shamblin blamed interference by International Labor Defense lawyers for the violence.

Johnson Asked To Pay Cash At Dayton Hotel

Hugh S. Johnson NRA chief arrived unprepared for a trip from St Louis to Washington. Bad weather delayed him so he checked into a Dayton hotel without luggage or toothbrush and was asked to pay in advance. A reporter vouched for him, but the clerk declined and he left. Another hotel accommodated him.

Dry leaders urged to let beer law aid feed relief

Watertown August 14. J J Martin State Grange master and governor emergency forage committee chair urged drys to permit the beer revenue self into effect to fund feed relief in drouth areas. He says the program supports cows sows hens and work horses and notes threats from drys to challenge the law. The move aims to provide funds despite opposition as federal and state authorities designate beer as the feed relief source.

Ex State Senator Horton Dies From Injuries In Spokane

Joseph E Horton 78 a retired real estate dealer and former South Dakota state senator died in a Spokane hospital from injuries after being struck by a speeding car. He had crossed the street and entered the car’s path, witnesses said. Horton served as SD state senator from 1890 to 1892.

Drum Corps and Bands Boost Legion Convention Festivities

Fifteen drum corps and eight bands are in Aberdeen to color the American Legion state convention. The parade and floodlight show cap the three day event with a 6 30 p m start and a 7 30 drum corps contest at Huron college football field. State champion Aberdeen faces Pierze Huron Mitchell Rapid City in Class A men’s, Onida leads Class B men’s, women’s teams from Rapid City Centerville Huron, with juniors from Howard Canton Gettysburg. Six hundred dollars in prizes to drum corps winners plus assorted bands from Sioux Falls Dennox Garden City and others. A Mennonite colony band from Bridgewater an Indian band from Rapid City and a Black Hills cowboy band add variety. Tonight features a commander’s banquet and boxing show. Tuesday includes business sessions committee reports and speeches before the parade and show.

McKenzie Sees Attendance Up At Legion Convention

South Dakota American Legion opened its annual convention in Huron with 700 Legionnaires and 325 Auxiliary members registered at noon. McKenzie reported attendance better than any Legion meeting in four years while plans for veterans aid regulations under the National Economy Act were discussed by Carl Brown of Washington, D. C. A state commander election is due Wednesday, with candidates including Walter Travis of Rapid City and R. O. Henderson in Redfield leading the field.
