The community calendar lists informal evenings at Miss Marie Birks home 479 Montsam Ave with bridge after a waffle supper. The wedding of James Packard and Beulah Jones occurred at the bride’s parents’ home with Rev. Carlson officiating. Various clubs met for meetings and socializing as residents hosted guests and celebrated birthdays and births.

Mrs J and Hinman of Los Angeles arrived yesterday morning as guests of Mrs John Greene. Dr H R Upton of Dawson Minnesota and his niece Miss Julia Dickson of Scotland visited the Carsons. Public dinner at St Martins Catholic church Sunday August 16 at 1 pm. Mrs C B Anderson and son Charles of Ottumwa Iowa are guests at the Beddow home. Boarding school Write St Stephen School Bridgewater Idaho. Mrs H Nelson and Martha Ann of Brooklyn N Y and Mrs Cor Nelson of Mitchell left for Nantort after a day at the Boughton home. Rev T H Joeckel and family returned from a vacation on Little Pine Lake near Perham. Ladies of the Christian Church meet at The Delite Shop. Mrs Jack Lonien and children left for St Peter Minnesota. Dr John Faust returned from a Lake Okoboji vacation. Please have correct change ready for carrier. All papers stop in arrears. Mrs Sylvia Fleming of Winona returned home after five weeks with aunt Mrs Erwin Edler.

Wessington Springs hosts Red Cross life saving examiners

Six men qualified as Red Cross examiners during an intensive training day at the Wessington Springs pool. New examiners include Francis Johnson of Woonsocket and Scott Dexter of Huron for Beadle and surrounding counties. Harvey Sechter and Edoyd Sherman in Beadle. Lloyd Mack of Lake Preston and Gilmore Van Ols of Wessington Springs for Jerauld and Kingsbury. The group aims to sustain a life saving corps and extend first aid services locally.

National Cooperative Buys Oklahoma Pools

Farmers National Grain corporation a government sponsored cooperative bought the common stock of the Oklahoma Wheat Pool Prevator and the Oklahoma Wheat Pool Terminal, subsidiaries of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers association. It announced an agreement to market and handle all grain from produce members of the association.

Spink County Budget Cut More Than Half

Spink county faces a 52 percent budget reduction for 1932, with the commission cutting 145,184 from a 274,02 appropriation and trimming nearly every department. Bert of Woonsocket Pioneer Careered Across South Dakota

Bert, known locally, attended Woonsocket schools and graduated with honors from Woonsocket High School in June 185. He and his mother later moved to Artesian where he worked for Security State Bank. Health issues led him to relocate to Stanley County in 1810 to farm and prove up a homestead, then moving to Artesian and Forestburg. He died after a paralytic stroke on August 6, 1931, and was taken to a hospital in Huron.
