Court Term One Of Most Costly In Beadle County
Beadle County faces its largest single term bill as the last two months’ court expenses near record highs. Requisitions total about 5900 for witness, bailiff, and juror fees, with more claims pending. The term included high profile trials of Ehnert, Flaherty, and Decker, all sentenced to state prison. Juror and bailiff costs reached 4667.50, and wheel fees pushed expenditures higher. The June session saw many important criminal cases, while civil matters largely postponed to September. The biggest civil win recovered about 4000 in attorney fees for Ward versus Ward, netting the plaintiff 45000. The overrun drained funds, forcing the use of 400 from the miscellaneous fund. An earlier costly term in 1927 involved the Farmers & Merchants bank robbery trials, totaling 5214.45 in juror and witness costs.
