Windrowing grain at night shows promise in trials
BROOKINGS August 1 Windrowing of ripe grain may be done at night experiments at State college show. The windrower was run two nights with cool and hot conditions. cutting occurred in hour intervals. Moisture tests were taken between cuts. About one third of grain left as stubble to improve air circulation and aid drying. Grain may be picked up in four to six days after cut. Pickup losses lower when windrows are left rather than standing for threshing, according to D E Wiant in charge. Weedy oats were used to compare with weed-free fields to reflect real conditions. Weeds keep moisture in their stems and raise grain moisture content above safe storage levels. A moisture content above 34 percent risks damage. yields data are not yet compiled.
