A man identified as George Baby Face Nelson, Dillinger gunman, was believed cornered by a large posse in northern Wisconsin near Fifield and Lac du Flambeau after a car theft tied him to the escape from Mercer. Officers scoured woods and roads as St Paul police eyed a Wisconsin plate car. Ollie Catfish said Nelson forced him to guide the way before a highway junction.

In Washington on April 21 Edgar Hoover director of the justice department division of investigation said Boston reports that a large portion of the $50,000 Lindbergh ransom had been found in New England were without truth. He noted the reports stem from a Vermont weekend visit by 10 agents studying an extortion case which did not relate to the Lindbergh case and the extortion inquiry failed to proceed.
