Commodity prices rise statewide amid March gains

Pierre April report shows wholesale commodity prices up about four percent from February lows, with half the advance erased by mid March. Farm products and food prices climbed, while fuels and metals fell, leaving only two of eight major groups above prewar levels as of April 4.

Westlake Transferred From Crow Creek to Mayajo Reservation

W L Westlake, longtime government farmer on the Crow Creek Indian reservation, is transferred to the Mayajo Indian reservation in Arizona. A farewell event at Grace Howard Mission featured talks by community leaders and Superintendent Gertrude Flyte, praising his agricultural programs, livestock improvements, road gravelling, and cash-based school operations. Locals regret his departure but honor his work advancing farming methods.

Huron Speaker to Compete at Platte

Platte April 28 hosts the high school state declamatory meet in the town auditorium. Contestants in oratorical drama and humorous sections include Clarence Schrodweiler Irving Axelrad Phyllis Delen Donald Gibbs and Howard Austin as well as Edward Nervig Harriet Lapgland Ruth Hunter Violet Olmstead Kathryn Farrel Wilbur Johnson Margery Button Lily Holm James Fitzpatrick and Loys Lee. State entrants were chosen from district eliminations with MO high schools entering for the first time in this district.

De Molay Banquet Held At Redfield Masonic Temple

The seventh annual father and son banquet of Henry Sadler chapter De Molay was held in the Redfield Masonic Temple basement with about forty De Molays, forty fathers and several entertainers. Lee Alexander served as toastmaster. Leonard Balsiger offered the first toast. J B Heinmuitler, S W Clark and others spoke. Norma Schade performed a vocal solo and Heles Summerside played piano. Evelyn Jacobson whistled, Fred Baisiger accompanied on piano, Philis Dais led group singing, and Dad Barden gave the benediction. Eastern Star women organized the dining room under Mrs Hollynd and Mrs Dud’s supervision.

Preston April 2 A memorial service marked the anniversary for the Fellows and Rebekah lodges at the Methodist church. L A Johnson delivered the sermon with a choir directed by M L Johnson and a duet by Lois Van Tassel and Mrs P A Anderson. A large turnout of Rebekahs and Odd Fellows attended.

Huron Boy To Head Scabbard And Blade

Max Brown, a Huron high school graduate and junior in general science, will head Scabbard and Blade at State college for the coming year. He was chosen captain of the company in the recent officers election. Glenn Sutera of Huron was chosen as second lieutenant as part of twelve new members joining the organization. Both have been active in military affairs and campus life during the first year of the advanced course.

Post Easter Service At Lake Preston

A community post Easter service was held in the high school auditorium Sunday evening. The program featured the Faster play His Cross performed by youth from Methodist and Congregational churches under Mrs J T Rider. The cast included Abedia LeRoy Wienk Sarah Dorothy Maxam Elizabeth Dorothy Cother Totm Sylvan Isaacson Rufus Warren Freeman Joram Holand Garlock Simon Randall Kieth. Choirs from Methodist Congregational and Lutheran churches sang two selections each. A large crowd packed the auditorium to enjoy the program.

C L Chase rural credit director says no broad back to the land movement started by city dwellers. He notes inquiries from Pennsylvanians Ohioans Indians Wisconsinites about moving to South Dakota and forecasts foreclosures increasing to about 4.5 million acres unless land sales are boosted. He cites new 1933 laws effective July 1 and favorable tax treatment as selling points and discusses Chicago World’s Fair promotion and Century of Progress buttons to fund the state exhibit.

Primitive kitchen tools are shown at the University of South Dakota museum. W H Over curator notes the oldest grater came from a tomato cart top with melted beer solder. It was donated by Mable K Richardson whose parents made and used it.

District Legion Meet Planned at Gann Valley

Final arrangements are set for the district nine convention of the American Legion and Auxiliary 10 in Gann Valley on Tuesday April 4. Department officers attending include Department Commander Harry Kehm Harrisburg Adj Utant J D Mulany Watertown National Committeeman Dr Carl Lenker Colone Department Auxiliary President Henrietta Pavison Summit Secretary Florence Lee Estelline. A meeting of auxiliary presidents and secretaries is planned in the forenoon with a 1 pm joint ceremonial opening and separate sessions to follow. A banquet at six pm will be followed by a short program of talks and musical numbers.

Winston Wrench Rites Held in Lake Preston Today

Funeral services for Winston Wrench were conducted at Lewis Funeral Parlors at 2 PM with Rev. R H Evane officiating. Interment followed at Lake Preston cemetery. He was the grandson of E Hoberg and lived with his mother Marie Wrench in Longview Washington. He died of influenza earlier in the week. body arrived Saturday evening. He spent much of last summer in Lake Preston with his grandfather and made many friends. Surviving relatives include his mother and grandfather and a number of other relatives.

Chinaware from former VP Fairbanks to USD Museum

Vermillion April 24 donated items from Charles W. Fairbanks home aged 150 to 200 years, blueware china and pewterware, to the University of South Dakota Museum by Mrs. E. H. Willy. Curator W. H. Glee Club Operetta Pleases At Iroquois

Iroquois high school glee clubs presented The Gypsy rover in an operetta praised for its cast led by Miss Genevieve Albright. A large audience enjoyed strong vocal work and violin performances by E. O. Casperson. The high school band directed by Mr. Aughenbaugh showcased, with plans for more summer rehearsals and performances.

Crossed Breeding Reported Near Wellington Springs

On a farm northwest of Wellington Springs, Peter Sande observed a bird described as a cross between a mallard and a Chinese ming necked pheasant. The creature has a pheasant tail, gray comb halfway up, partially webbed feet, wide toes, dark green color, and a ducklike flight. Neighbors recall a similar description in Zarm paper last year under the caption Pheasant Tamalorida.

Pierre, Apr 22 The price situation shows a steady improvement in farm product values as reported by the federal economic review. Cotton hogs wheat and several major farm items rose in March while dairy and hay declined. corn and wheat led gains, with live stock prices lagging despite the overall advance.

The Birthday club met at the home of Mrs Grace Simon on August 24 with guests Mrs J Authier and Mrs G A Ashpole. Bridge was played with prizes for high score won by Mrs Cliff 8 and all-out by Mrs Arthur Bail. Consolation went to Mrs C M Burler and refreshments were served by the hostess.
