Three Huron Musicians Chosen for Brookings Contest

Three more Huron high school musicians join earlier selections to represent the city in the music contest at Brookings on April 0. Clarinet winner Eldred Balzer over Everett Irish performed The Lovely Month of May. Violinists played Kreisler Chanson Arabe. Bernice Bowers earned the district treet slot. Baritone Merle Schroeder performed Gaiety Polka. competitors included Charles Shepherd. Huronians Hurt In Car Accident

Mr and Mrs Hennig and Mrs Alfred Getuin and Mrs Frank Ripley suffered minor injuries when the Hennig car rolled into a ditch while returning from Minneapolis. The mishap occurred Monday around 9 PM after striking loose gravel on the Reed road, causing the vehicle to overturn and damage a window.

School Art In Windows by Pupils At Huren Public Schools

A window display features dozens of soap carvings created by fifth to seventh grade pupils under Ilma Schubert, director of art in the grade schools. The figures include elephants bobcats sailboats and pigs, carved from soap using knives and manicure tools.

Small Town Trade Safe If Merchants Modernize Says Leader

Willow Lake April 17 Special The three spokes of activity for a small town merchant say trade need not shrink if retailers adopt modern methods. They note larger towns like Huron won’t usurp all trade and that farmers keep the town alive. The Willow Lake Chamber of Commerce dinner, attended by Clark and Bryant clubs, emphasized agricultural development and broader farming-related commerce. President Claud E. Central South Dakota to Receive 3000 Chinese Elms Monday

More than 3,000 Chinese elms will be distributed to planters across Central South Dakota next Monday. Ordered during a campaign by the Ironic Walton league and The Evening Huronite, the trees are prepaid and shipping costs covered by sponsors. Purchasers with Huron addresses will pick up at The Evening Huronite, others at designated town addresses. each package will be tagged with recipient names and planting instructions.

Sharpe Presents Tax Return Statements In Embezzlement Hearing

In county court here today at the hearing on embezzlement charges against Fred R. Smith former South Dakota banking superintendent testimony revealed alleged financial trans actions. Lenore J. Chastine a stenographer and teller testified about transactions involving the Farmers Agricultural Credit Corporation of Platte of which Smith was secretary and about signatures forged in Smiths name on tax returns. Attorney General M Q Sharpe introduced what appeared to be photostatic copies of tax returns for 1924 to 1928 with an endorsement stating the corporation had no capital stock no business and kept no books. Chastine also identified deposits Smith directed into his personal Platte bank account and notes payable to the bank signed by Smith as secretary of the credit corporation. The surprise evidence followed her morning testimony and the proceeding was adjourned for a break before further testimony.
