Custer Storm Remembered In Dakota History

Pierre April 15. A storm on April 13 56 years ago became one of Dakota’s notable events as General Custer and his Seventh Cavalry near Yankton endured a blizzard that left his cabin isolated for 36 hours. Relief arrived Tuesday morning as Yankton residents aided troops and camp families amid a mix of danger and relief.

Groton Seniors Stage Class Comedy Madam the Boss

Groton high school's senior class has chosen the three act comedy Madam the Boss for its play. Practice has begun in a thriving midwestern town setting during a mayoral election period with a tentative April 24 performance. Kingsbury county schools will send delegates to a county spelling contest and the annual Young Citizens' League meeting at De Smet High School. Rev W C Bessellier will address the gathering. Spelling contest starts 10:30 AM followed by the Y C L meeting at 1:39 PM.

Highmore Boy Named to Annapolis Naval Academy

Gerald O. O'Brien of Highmore has received an appointment to the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis and will take his examination in Washington on April 17. He is the son of M Harry O'Brien, former law partner of Congressman Royal C Johnson, and is a Highmore high school graduate noted for athletics debate and oratory. He has studied at DeVittes Preparatory School in Washington since last September and will take the examination in Washington.

Gann Valley Woman Hurt In Accident

A Ford sedan driven by Robert Brown skidded into a ditch three miles east of Gann Valley injuring Mrs. Ira King. Mrs. King was taken to Gann Valley then to Wessington Springs for possible fractured limb. The crash occurred on a wet highway as Brown turned to meet another auto. damage to the car was minimal.

28 Potter Farmers Plan Shelterbelts

GETTYSBURG April 15 Special Twenty eight Potter county farmers have asked for help this spring for 1930 shelterbelt planting. They will have their shelterbelts staked out by A L Ford tree specialist Extension service Brookings during the week of April 22. Properly locating the shelterbelt summer fallowing and clean cultivation are important factors Cass Entorf county agent said.

Gettysburg Dairy Calf Club Forms Under Kiwanis Sponsorship

The Gettysburg Dairy Calf club organized with 15 members under county agent Carl Entorf and Kiwanis support. A committee plans to buy calves for this and the Haven Dairy Calf club in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin, aiming to return with calves around April 22. Gettysburg members will raise nine Guernseys four Holsteins and two purebred milking Shorthorns. More members are expected to enroll.

Groton boards elect R L Snyder of Hurley consolidated schools to head local system for coming year. Snyder served six years at Hurley as athletics director principal and superintendent, holds a B A from South Dakota University, and is highly recommended. Club Boys Get 22 Pure Bred Gilts

Gettysburg April 15 Specta Fuster county farmers expect better breeding stock next fall per county agent Carl J Entorf. Twenty two purebred gilts were shipped to Gettysburg and German pig clubs from top herds in South Dakota and Minnesota. The two clubs, new in Potter county, total 23 members.Gilts are allocated as seven Hampshire seven Chester White four Spotted Poland four Poland China and one Duroc Jersey. All gifts are registered and boys plan to register their litters.
