South Dakota Prepares for New Gross Tax Law Start

South Dakota moves to implement the gross income tax beginning May 1 under state finance director L. Carey, with a July 1 effective date unless a referendum delays. Plans include 11 districts, 12 fieldmen, and a $200,000 administration allocation from the tax proceeds. The tax groups cover manufacturing wholesaling livestock salaries and wages and all others with rates from 0.25 to 2 percent.

Psychology professor offers child rearing tips on air

Vermillion April 12 a University of South Dakota professor C C Josey discussed child rearing injunctions on a radio talk. He urged study of the child and offered negative and positive rules such as do not bribe avoid fear of imaginary threats do not lie be honest avoid excessive praise and be consistent. He emphasized a united parental front and letting the child face problems to develop self control.

Mrs Doris York McIntosh Dies in Rochester

Mrs Doris York McIntosh formerly of Parker died in Rochester Minnesota after an illness. She had lived in Highmore since moving from Parker about a year ago. She leaves a ten day old daughter, husband J J York station agent for North Western, her parents, and siblings Dale and Helen. The family departed for Rochester Monday evening.

Planting Trees In Hyde County

Special county project supervised by Judge J L Whischer aims to set out many trees in Hyde county as part of reconstruction work. Men will secure trees from the Missouri river and haul them to Highmore for distribution across the county using the county truck. The trees include cottonwood and other species.

Boy Injured Shoulder In Highmore Horse Fall

Eight year old son of Clyde Liesrance brought to Highmore with a fractured shoulder after a fall from a horse ten days earlier. Initial diagnosis cited a sprain but X rays confirmed the break. Doctors faced difficulty in setting the bone while the patient remained faint.

Potter County Needs Moisture for Crops

Gettysburg April 12 Special soil reports from county agent Louis J Thompson say Foster county soils are good for first crop but require more moisture than currently available. Planting area should remain similar to last year except durum and possibly hopper damaged corm acreage may drop.

Fern Williams and Clark Bales from the seventh and eighth grades Eleanor Atkinson and Stanley McMichan from the fifth and sixth grades went to Huron as delegates to the convention Saturday.

Varying Beer Prices Reported In Aberdeen Joints

An Aberdeen reporter found varying beer prices in local joints with imium 2-cent and a one vent per bottle limit. The standard price cited by South Dakota and neighboring states dealers is 35 cents per bottle or three for a dollar. Prices range from 10 to 15 cents at the Minnesota brewery door, with cases listed between 4 and 6.50 dollars and a single buyer paying 8.80 for a case.

Yankton Teachers Salaries Cut for Next Year

Yankton schools reduce teacher salaries by 182 dollars, about 2.31 percent, at a board of education meeting. Six teaching positions are dropped, two departments eliminated, and auto mechanics special course removed with one instructor. 1933-34 payroll falls from 77392 to 59200 dollars.

Rail rates for dairy and poultry shipments refused

General increases sought by railroads in the freight gates on carload lots of dairy and poultry shipped from South Dakota and other western states to eastern markets were denied by the Interstate Commerce Commission. The commission will require continuation of the existing maximum rates, set at 60 percent of first class for butter eggs and dressed poultry and 63 percent for live poultry. South Dakota traffic totals about 4.0 carloads annually.

Mt Vernon will not hold a city election on April 18 as no petitions were circulated or filed by the April 8 deadline and there is no opposition. The current officeholders will remain in place for another year.

District Masons Set for Annual South Dakota Session

Members of the Masonic lodges in the first district will meet in Yankton on April 17 for their annual session. Grand master Thurlow Burrington of Rapid City and other South Dakota grand lodge officers are expected to attend.

South Dakota to Expand Lakes for Water and Recreation

Moré recreation projects in South Dakota will add 1460 acres of surface water through 20 new lakes and ongoing work. The program, funded by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and counties, will boost annual water volume and possibly regional precipitation. Lake details include Faulk, Kingsbury, Tripp, Lyman, Jackson, Todd, Stanley, Haakon, Potter, Beadle, Custer, Ziebach, Butte, Dewey, Perkins, and parity completed and planned sites with depths from 12 to 35 feet.
