Buildings In Path Of Fire Among First In Huron
The path of Wednesday night’s fire traced to some of Huron’s earliest structures. The Corbin House on Third Street and Dakota Avenue, built in the 1880s by Lyman J. Corbin, served as a hotel. The Wright House, later renamed the Windsor House, shifted to the northeast corner of Third Street and Dakota Avenue and was razed after fire damage. The 1885 corner became home to the Huron National Bank and the Tip Top cigar store. The Third Street block later housed Osborn Clothing, Jnrold apparel, Fleming’s, and Robinson Shoe Company. The 1894 Grand Opera House stood where J. C. Penney later operated, destroyed by fire in 2002. The Elks-built two-story building housed the Penney store, Chamber of Commerce, and Boy Scouts offices, erected in 1904.
