Air Cooled Motor Losing Favor for War Use
Air Corps officials in Washington say liquid cooled engines are preferred for military planes. Air cooled designs suffer excessive air resistance from fins, hindering speed. liquid systems use a radiator and circulating fluid, enabling streamline construction and higher speeds. Gasoline cooling favors keeping cylinders cool, and fuel efficiency is better with liquid systems, offsetting weight in typical combat loads.
