South Dakota Education Association leaders S. B. Nissen and H. G. Mosby say the teachers retirement law remains inoperative after two legislatures failed to appropriate funds. They accuse party leaders of breaking pledges and call for anew appropriation to implement retirement benefits for teachers.
Legislators backed Rep Hembd Ipswich bill to repeal the 1939 retirement law while the Senate rejected a companion bill 25 to 9. The House approved 58 to 22. Teachers remain focused on retirement as a SDEA objective. A proposed $40,000 appropriation for pension machinery was not voted on after Hembd's measure passed.
Officials announced Lloyd W. Eaton of Belle Fourche South Dakota as the outstanding trainee of the 1940 citizens military training camp in the seventh corps area. Eaton, a University of Wyoming graduate, attended Fort Lincoln North Carolina last summer and was recommended by the corps area commander. Presentation will be by Dr. Arthur G. Crane at Laramie on Army Day.
WESSINGTON April 3 Special Division 2 of the Union Aid Society held its first meeting of the church year at Mrs F D Fitch home. Elected officers were Chairman Hazel Fitch Vice Chair Irene Daugherty Secretary Lillian Major Treasurer Stella Major Nine members attended with guest Mrs Elwood leading devotionals. Meeting dates set for the second Tuesday each month. Plans made for Mothers Day May 13 at Mrs Charles Huddleston home with Stella Major assisting.
