Geo. W. De Long Post No 49 Grand Army of the Republic held its fourteenth anniversary at Senator Wright’s Little Britain home. The event featured a bonfire, electric lights, festive tables, and speeches recalling Civil War memories. Commander I Jay Greene led toasts as Minister Willis and others praised Union veterans and national unity.
A New York dispatch details Li Hung Chang as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary with doctors, cooks, and followers, staying in the United States. It notes his vast wealth, fascination with diamonds for his daughter in law, and the coffin and ceremonial prep for his eventual burial in orthordox Chinese style.
In district court Captain Zimmere and Cadet Vinla Monroe of the Salvation Army were found not guilty of obstructing a public highway after testimony from Officer J. Padig and defense witnesses. The case described a Sunday night arrest amid a small, singing crowd and disputed disturbance claims. Judge desVergnes discharged the defendants.
