Prospects for sugar prices brighten amid European beet shortfall forecasts. Brokers report continued demand for raw sugar as French beet crops shrink, with specialists predicting a 4 to 12 cent rise per pound next season. Prices fluctuated as brokers warned the shortage may not sustain into the coming year.
New York reports American Hawaiian Steamship Company preparing to buy land at St Thomas West Indies to install a fuel plant. Ships plying New York Honolulu San Francisco would burn fuel locally, enabling round trips without other ports. Prior services were at Coronel and St Lucia.
Richard Dey, local rep of Clarence H. Mackay, predicts telegraphic communication between San Francisco and Honolulu within eighty days as Pacific cable work proceeds. John W. Mackay’s son, executor of the estate, returns to New York for a directors meeting, then to London for family matters before resuming efforts to complete the transpacific cable with planned shore ends and a landing at Hawaii Manila and Guam. The project costs about 12.5 million dollars and Mackay plans to spend part of the year in San Francisco while maintaining a home here.
Arrival at the Venus harbor includes H N Hington taking over from Mr Dickinson who has represented the Poetic Commodore Cable Company. Dickinson departs for Colombia while the Britian cable settlement nears a Vancouver to Fanning Island run. No ship has been declared for soundings to Guam and the Philippines yet. Dickinson aims to return by December for the port landing.
Arctic explorer Peary states he will return to the north after completing efforts with available facilities. He plans to report to the Washington Department in a few days and continues to believe the Pole can be reached, noting it is a matter of money and of the expedition’s support. Meanwhile Cooper is named public works representative, and bids for a ladder rack extension are opened by the Fire Commissioner with several contractors listed and prices.
A Chinese clerk to the Bulletin cites five major gambling houses in operation in Chinatown on Hotel Pauab and Maunaken streets with thousands invested. He says $3000 to $4000 in weekly wages are diverted to gaming, affecting lawful business, and urges law guardians to act through publicity and enforcement.
In San Francisco on September 25 the sugar market showed a stronger tone with several raw sugar stocks advancing. Public Works department clerk Manuel Cooke received a letter from J M Boyd in Ventura noting delays in returning to Honolulu. The missive laments Treasurer Wright and Chief Clerk B H Wright’s failure to provide full incident details despite prior promises. The note references Father McKinnon and John W McDonald connections in Honolulu and mentions family ties across California and Manila.
A suspected arson attempt damaged the boardwalk near a house in Manoa Valley.
