A May 20 1896 meeting in Honolulu announced elective officers for ensuing years. The notice also states all outstanding bills against the Senate must be presented by Monday January 1 1606. The fragmented text lists names of wine houses and partners.
The Senate debated the income tax bill, delaying definite action to avoid conflicts with the internal revenue measure. Senators discussed the Jones bond offer and a potential London-backed loan, with Minister Damon urging executive review and a quick vote. The session approved the land health bill and other measures, then adjourned to Monday.
A May 2001 report details a legislative session in which a bill to allow free postage letters from the Leper Settlement and a three physician examining board were debated and passed. Other actions include liquor duty changes, wine and sake provisions, and land transfer bills. The Women’s Exchange thanked contributing firms and individuals for support at the new Merchant street rooms.
