Admirers present him long black cigars of the finest tobacco from the Netherlands. He believes tobacco smoke may ease his neuralgic pains.

Crowd fills Opera House for McAdoo Minstrels show

A crowded afternoon audience at the Opera House enjoyed the McAdoo Minstrels. Godfrey and another buyer helped secure the house, turning the performance into a successful event as patrons stood and reacted favorably to the entertaining show.

Alarmingly Close Shave at Kilxuen Plantation Lightning Strike

George R. Ewart, manager of Kilxuen plantation in Kanai, relates a near miss during a recent electrical storm. A thunderbolt struck the area, smashing two telegraph poles and a gate post near Smythe’s head lane. Kanai has borne the brunt of thunderbolts on these islands, with a Japanese couple killed at their cabin door years ago by a similar strike.

Barn and Horses Burned in Kalibi Fire

Fire destroyed F. F. Porter’s barn in Kalibi last night at about 10 30. Two fine horses perished along with harness wagon and a supply of bavanea bound for shipment in Alameda tomorrow. Porter estimates losses at 1500 dollars with no insurance. Cause unknown but suspected to be a discarded match from banana packing. Porter is away from the property this afternoon investigating.

Japanese women escape hospital detainees recaptured

Two Japanese women sent to the Board of Health hospital fled yesterday and were recaptured shortly after. They are now held at the police station for processing.

Police Present Gift to Attorney General Smith in Surprise Ceremony

In a deputy marshal office surprise today, William Owen Smith received a beautiful solid silver coffee and tea service from the Police Department and Smith, Sturgeon & Co. The gift, inscribed PRESENTED TO WILLIAM OWEN SMITH, ATTORNEY GENERAL by the Police Department 1893 1899, came from the Schooner Abbs and was released from the Custom House that morning.

Portugere Lads in Court Over Howleie House Affair

Three Portuguese lads appeared in the Police Court this morning for investigation in connection with the Howleie house affair. Their counsel will wage a further inquiry. First Auger from Oxte and Erekinn 8 Phelps were hauled to the railroad wharf to take on more sugar. A plant at Orba mill turns out the first batch. Victoria party in Honolulu shows grand exhibit decor

The Victorian ball at the N G H Armory dazzled with an electric display. Gro L Dall designed the decor with Viggo Jacobsen and W Horney Wright directing. Honolulu society praised the lavish arrangements, supper by Home Bakery, and mixed attendance of many nationalities. Chamber of Commerce adjourned on Hawaii expo plans with talks on exhibits, funding, and possible national sessions.

Schooner Mokulele Lost In Heavy Kauai Weather

The schooner Mokulele, also known as Berioy Sea, wrecked at Wai naba near Kauai during severe winds and foaming seas. Captain Joep Leving plans return to Honolulu to report as crews abandoned ship and the vessel drifted ashore in gale conditions. Owned by T J King, built in Tacoma in 1895, insured for 22500 pounds.

Police Inspection Delayed by Uniform Confusion

This morning police mounted and foot patrols were called out for inspection but appeared in regular uniforms. Foot police wore monk outfits. Attorney General Gospad was absent. Marmbal Brown attended to the ellipse. The barkentine Irmgard is expected from San Francisco tomorrow or Saturday.
