May 12 Fort de France Mart inique reports Mt Pierre and Mont Polontestilt eruptions devastate communities. Unburied dead crowd streets as ash and ash fall drift to Dominica and Saint Vincent. Authorities struggle to relieve suffering and prevent plague from spreading.
London May 16. Asked about reports that Andrew Carnegie offered to pay 20 million dollars for the Philippines if authorized to announce independence under U S sovereignty, Carnegie declined to confirm specifics while hinting at a possible affirmative. The remark stirred interest over potential U S policy and Philippine independence.
Reports from Cedar County Neb claim Mount Jone the lone U S volcano is emitting smoke and steam after a 30 year quiet causing local settlers to fear eruption and consider leaving their homes. The mountain sits along the Missouri River about 150 miles above Omaha and has long been viewed as a dangerous, sacred site by Indians and early explorers.
May 13 Fort de France Martinique reports looting at St Pierre ruins. The US tug Potomac rescued a boat with five colored men and one white man whose pockets held jewelry and calm. Lieutenant McCormick arrested them and handed them to the French cruiser Suchot for punishment.
From New York Maritime Register a list shows vessels believed to have been in the roadstead at St Pierre when Mont Pelée erupted. It names Italian bark Albanes, American schooner Anne J. Mora, Canadian steamship chopper, and several other Italian, French, British, Italian arks and barks plus two vessels cleared for Martinique may have been there.
Washington May 12 President Roosevelt sent a message to Congress requesting 500000 for West Indies relief. The House and Senate promptly approved 200000 with the balance to be raised by private subscription. The relief bill was moved under the District of Columbia measures to allow quick consideration.
From Guadalajara a dispatch reports Colima volcano showing renewed activity with smoke and flames near the peak. Residents in the valley at its base flee to safety as construction on the Mexican Central Railroad extension to Manzanillo is halted temporarily due to the threat.
A cablegram from the United States Consul at Fort Fraser reports that the client’s applications are sufficient for the Maine war effort. It notes subscriptions in the Puled Shone will ease at one and that relief arrangements are considered adequate despite ongoing needs.
Old Crater on St Vincent labors with molten lava after earthquakes. A new crater forms in the northwest, sending steam clouds eight miles high. Eruptions disperse ash and lava, destroying districts, killing livestock and people, and causing famine as coastal towns panic. Government prepares for survivors and burial trenches, with many districts still cut off.
The Pacific Mail steamship Peru, Captain A F Pillsbury, arrived early this morning with cabin passengers for this port, 204 bags of mail and 57 boxes of general freight. A passenger, John Marks, suffered a fall during rough seas and sustained injuries. he will remain in Honolulu to recover. Also aboard were Captain John Boardman and artist K Kendall among others bound for Yokohama and Honolulu, with weather noted as rough during the voyage and a minor incident of water intake on deck.
May 17 dispatches from Washington and London contradict rumors of Lord Paune tote resigning as British Ambassador. The British and U.S. reports say no final decision has been made on his health or departure, with a statement indicating the audience at Andrew's Cathedral will be held later that day.
New York on May 17 reports a clone of nine enervors believes volcanic dust from the Woat In A dlow haw reached here. The dust is faintly visible at sunrise and may redden the sky when blood red tinges appear. Scientists doubt the dust will be noticeable beyond month’s end.
An alert from Hilo reports Kilaua volcano emitting dense smoke and steam with signs of possible eruption soon. Witnesses note dark plumes and tremors as authorities monitor molten activity and potential lava flow, while residents prepare for ash and gas exposure.
The 48 by 20 foot two story houseboat built for HN Almy at Pearl River will be completed in detail and ready for occupancy in about a month. It includes a living room bedroom kitchen dining row pantry servants’ room and a mosquoto proof design with two floors and multiple rooms. Almy plans to entertain friends or rent the space as a retreat and work on the project was supervised by carpenter John Hughes from Almy’s plans.
Hon H M Whitney shares notes on sunset and sunrise colors, duration of glow in the west at around 7 o clock and in the east near 6 o clock. He references volcanic activity in the West Indies and compares it to earlier eruptions, noting uncertainty about how long it will last and mentioning Acton as the latest date for western volcanic activity.
Eyewitness account from Harbarioes on May 1 describes a night of volcanic eruption in Saint Pierre. The cathedral clock showed seven ten as cities burned and ships sank while a government cordon limited escape. New York May 11 These war ships have been ordered by their governments to the scene of the Martinique conflict with instructions to aid survivors. The American cruiser Cincinnati is en route from San Domingo. The Potomac sails from San Juan Porto Rico and the Dixie prepares to sail from New York. Transport Sedawick ready to carry clothing and supplies for inland troops. British cruiser Indefatigable from Trinidad. French cruisers Suchat D Assas and Tago from various stations. Danish cruiser Valkytten from St Thomas.
A visitor returning from the Inland near the Lolling Wake dinteret area described a boiling lake in Dominica. A vent ten feet wide expelled a column of steam about thirty feet high, with notably strong sulfur odors affecting the nearby district.
Topeka May 16 Carrie Nation was sentenced to thirty days in prison and fined $10 by Judge Harena in the District Court for amending 8 hour fixtures sloped in a vacant bar. She will not appeal and has gone to jail.
Washington reports May 12 cablegram from United States Consul Aymee at Guadeloupe. He describes dire conditions after Fort de France siege with Consul Prentis and family dead, refugees homeless and hungry, and requests rapid relief supplies including rice beans salt meat and bread.
A letter dated April 16 reports from Unalaska that Alaska Commercial Company agent N Grey describes volcanic disturbances in the region. Earthquakes have shaken the area and villages are covered by ash from distant western volcanoes as winds carry the ash across the landscape.
