Self Annexation Scheme for Hawaii Under U S Sovereignty

A Washington dispatch from April 29 reports a bill sent to Hawaii with a plan to place the islands under United States sovereignty if war with Spain occurs. Similar dispatches from April 26 omit President Dole’s name. Britain seeks control of Pacific routes if the US does not, and Honolulu could host a large fleet of British ships. The English Foreign Office favors US occupation to safeguard its lines to Australia. President Dole acknowledged receiving the bill but declined to comment. The notice suggests annexation decisions now rest with Hawaii’s government and legislature, with war implications.
