A 1905 Kilauea eruption draws Chicago visitors and Nebraskans alike as lava pours and mist veils the crater. Reports describe glowing lava seen at times, with varied distances and dramatic fear mixed with awe.
The House began committee of the whole on County Bill No. 2 at 2 pm with Speaker Koudson in chair. Rep. Smith proposed changing Hawaii from five to six counties, splitting East and West Hawaii, with Hilo or Kailua as seats. Proponents argued two counties would benefit Hawaii. opponents questioned funding and receipts to cover the expanded counties.
Mrs Ballou wife of Attorney Ballou died suddenly this morning from childbirth at the family residence on Judd street. The infant daughter is expected to live. She was a niece of Senator Morgan of Alabama and daughter of General Hall Duke of Louisville. The Ballous married December 21 1896 in Louisville Kentucky and have lived in Honolulu most of their married life. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
Coroner's inquest into Jane L. Stanford's death at the Moana Hotel advances as chemists Duncan and Shorey report traces of strychnine in the stomach. High Sheriff Henry confirms the finding while noting no official detailed report yet. The case hinges on whether the poison was administered with criminal intent, and who would be guilty if proven.
The senate afternoon session saw multiple bills advanced or tabled including a leprosy divorce bill, a jury trial conduct reform with prosecution opening and final argument phases, and an appeal pathway from Land Registration Court to the Circuit Court. Also pending were archiving board, es trage impounding, and land rights commissions.
Arrivals from the Volcans House in Mauna Loa include 8 C Benedict Miss M Hayes and J Scott of San Francisco. Benedict, who nearly died recently, improves during a ten day inland stay with nurse Hayes and business rep Scott. He plans a tour of the Orient aboard a Pacific liner. A large sale of ladies and children’s wear is now at Kerr’s.
From St. Petersburg March 7 report says Russian positions grow desperate as siege damage mounts and Kuropatkin may retreat. If Kaulbars falls today, Kuropatkin's army could be almost surrounded amid Japanese pressure. United States wire details also note Stanford poisoning investigation updates and nominations for national treasurer and New York tax collector.
The session opened with the Senate discharging the House committee on county acts and returning all referred bills. House and Senate debated a railroad bill report, with motions to table and reconsider. Governor Carter planned a 2 pm conference with city liquor dealers to discuss a wholesale liquor measure. Sheriff J Searles returned to Hilo on the Kingu.
