Uncle John Brings Lumber to Hilo Wharf Tests New Landing

The barkentine Uncle John moored at Hilo Bay to discharge lumber for Hackfeld Co. The test showed the wharf can handle the vessel under calm seas, with lumber hauled to Hackfeld's yard. In rough weather the risk to bulwarks makes the approach less viable for heavily loaded ships.

Gehr to Lead Hilo and Kohala Railway Work Begins

Herbert B. Gehr, newly elected president of the Hilo and Kohala Railway Company, sails to meet Wade J. Browne in San Francisco and plans immediate railway construction in Hawaii. He pledges good faith backing and denies paying the Dillingham Thornton Company or engaging in scandalous dealings regarding charter objections.

Honolulu Plantation Row Ends in Bloodshed at Hospital

A hospital steward at Honolulu plantation clashed with a Japanese worker this morning, striking him and opening a scalp wound. The Japanese mob pursued the steward, who was captured in a house but saved from further harm by the manager and others. Dr McGrow treated the wound. the town was alerted as the BULLETIN reported. Mrs Guon plans a Kauai vacation, visiting Makaweli and Lihue with the Gaya family.

Waterhouse firm notes transfer of grocery and hardware

Circular letter from J. T. Waterhouse announces that on June 1 1899 the grocery and provision business is taken over by Henry May Co Ltd and the hardware and crockery division by Pacific Hardware Co Ltd. Waterhouse will stay with the corporations and asks customers to continue their support. Stores at Bethel street will host the grocery line, hardware stock moves to Pacific Hardware Co Ltd locations. Honolulu dated May 28 1899.

Desertion and affairs at Camp McKinley and Pearl Harbor

Private Frederick Bryan of Battery NI is discharged after three years and plans to stay in Honolulu with a promised mounted police position. Major Samuel Mil, Captains Adam Slaker Charles Satter loo and D W Ket cham visit Pearl Harbor to scout bar racks and quarters. Private Forest J. Youngs of Battery I faces a general court martial for desertion tied to a love affair. Captain Foote joins Battery N as Sixth Artillery commander. Emergency rations at sea and desertion cases noted. Battery A remains undefeated in three games, Makiki park hosts a recent match. Target practice for the Artillery Battalion set to begin July. Continued on Page 5.

The body of Queen Dowager Kapiolani lies in state in the private reception room at Paeleilani Waikiki. Visitors admitted until 4 PM. Hilo and Kohala Railway Charter Granted by Cabinet

The Hilo and Kohala Railroad Co. charter was amended and granted by the cabinet. The company, led by Browne Gehr Walker Swanzy Wild­er Jones and associates, may build operate and own rail lines on Hawaii Island from Hilo to Kohala with power to issue stock and bonds and to acquire land on Hawaii. The charter names a principal office in Honolulu and awaits ministerial signatures.
