Laupahoehoe 15 First to Lose Land to Homesteaders

Four hundred acres in the center of Laupahoehoe plantation have been surrendered to the government for homesteading. The tract runs from beach to forest line, splitting the plantation. This area was released in 1908 under a lease that runs until 1928, and other plantations may follow as the Land Board interprets rules. The move signals that prime cane land in the Territory will be claimed by homesteaders under the Organic Act.
