Board of Education Discusses Japanese Question
The Board of Education met in the afternoon with Superintendent Davie and commissioners present. They adopted a resolution urging the Public Works Department to provide suitable land for exchange to secure the Manonto Lotan for the Riverside School so the High School may be built on the Riverside School site as desired by the Hilo Board of Trade. The resignation of Prof W. D. Alexander was read and adopted, expressing deep regret at his long service and noting eighteen years on the Board, including a presidency. The Teacher's Committee report was read and adopted. Payroll figures were discussed showing increases since April and implications for teacher allocations. Discussion covered Asian pupil proportions, staffing by race, and the presence of private Japanese schools vs public schooling. The meeting also noted church membership and proposed a Sunday school initiative, with data on total school-age children and school facilities and costs.
