Militia Disperses Mobs in Evansville Riot

A mob clash in Evansville Indiana left six dead four fatally injured and sixteen seriously hurt. Militia was mobilized to break up the fight between black and white crowds as hundreds fled the scene.

Labor resolution and House actions in Hawaii Legislature

Labor resolution kumalae proposed raises for employees ruled out of order. Senate and House exchanged communications on committee appointments and an adopted conference report on the Loan Bill. Third readings considered including right of way for Coney estate at Tantalus and unpaid bills of the Board of Health. Summer School for Island Teachers Expands Courses

Great interest shown in two new courses drawing and English, and music added to required studies. The Summer School for island teachers is in full swing, promising to be more successful than last year. Listing of instructors includes Edgar Wood principal, W. T. Pope, A. McDonald, Ira G. Eaken, Bam R. Dowdle, Mina Plater, and others. Attendance rose from 8 to 125 with more arrivals expected from other islands. Examinations for teacher primary certificates set for Thursday and Friday, August 20 and 21, at the High School building. Subjects include arithmetic, grammar, dictation, geography, physiology, pedagogy, and methods of teaching drawing and music. An average of 85% entitles first-class. 86% second-class. 65% third-class certificates for two years. Noted enrollment includes many top teachers, some now pursuing life certificates after years of teaching. The two new features, music and English drawing, attract special interest. the English and drawing course by Mrs. Ith in G. Marshall merges grammar and composition into one combined course. Andrews Testimony in Disbarment Hearing Deemed Material

In disbarment proceedings this afternoon the attorney general said he did not know his testimony was material. The exchange involved discussions with Watson and objections by Thompson. Andrews testified it was not very material, and objections were debated as respondents were not present at the examination. The court was considering the objection.

Mauna Loa Overhauled Before Resuming Kona Run

The steamer Mauna Loa has been overhauled and refitted at Almont, with new boilers bulkheads and interior work, colors updated to black white and buff, improving passenger comfort. She will resume the Mant, Kona and Kauport routes next Monday. The W G Halt, used on Mauna Loa’s run, will be laid up for a general overhaul.

Arrest Warrant Issued for J Combs on Check Fraud Charge

After talks with Admiral Beckley and local authorities, High Sheriff Brows sent for Sheriff Andrews of Hawaii to arrest J Combs on multiple counts of passing counterfeit or worthless checks. Combs was a passenger on the Kthau from Hilo July 4 and later left at Mabue kpan. The case involves alleged financial deceit and planned land surveys were noted in separate items.
