Teller Attacks Cuban Reciprocity Policy in Senate Debate
Washington June 27 Senator Teller of Colorado led a sharp Senate debate on Cuban reciprocity. He accused backers of the policy of being financed by the American Sugar Refining Company and Cuban sugar interests while urging iron and steel duties be reduced to keep the plan fair for beet sugar growers. Platt of Connecticut argued the United States should promote reciprocity as a duty to defend friendly ties with Cuba and to safeguard national security.
