The Columbia, Newport’s new America's Cup defender, proved superior to Defender in a five minute race under eight knot winds. Columbia closed from the weather quarter, pulled ahead in five minutes, and left Defender anchored. Nicholson Rae fixed July 6 for the Columbia Defender race. Manns Wideman featured at the Pacific Aquatic Association carnival with notable relay swimming, while H I Bremer and H A Wideman dominated the half mile.

At the Queen's Hospital biennial meeting in the Chamber of Commerce rooms the corporation reviewed Eckardt's report showing 1575 indoor patients over 24 months with 168 deaths, 10.66 percent, and 34,781 in patient payments against 65,080 in current expenses. Endowed beds included Hackfeld and others. three more endowed beds were offered. Secretary Smith noted patient numbers, deaths, and the hospital's policy against admitting incurables. Trustees and government appointees were named. the treasurer's report was not authorized for publication.

The Tivoli Opera Company of San Francisco with thirty five artists and full chorus and orchestra will perform in August for a season of twelve shows. Evening performances are to be on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays with tickets for nine evenings at 12 dollars. Matinees cost 60 cents and reserved seats 1 dollar. Twelve years ago today the constitution of 1887 was promulgated.
