Senate Cable Bill Aims Pacific telegraph link contract

Representative Barham introduces Hale's bill to let the Postmaster General contract with Pacific Cable Company of New Jersey for San Francisco to Honolulu telegraphic service for twenty years from July 1 1897. The plan fixes payment by formulas tied to company expenditures, earnings, and tolls, with caps and possible adjustments. The cable must be operable by July 1 1897 transmitting at least fifteen words a minute, with penalties or cancellations if the line fails 120 consecutive days or more.

Celebrating the Twenty Fifth Anniversary of German Empire

The German community in Honolulu marked the twenty fifth anniversary of William I becoming Emperor with a park gathering at Independence Park from 2 pm to night and a grand dinner at the Hawaiian Hotel. Festive decorations, dancing, and German songs followed speeches by Conul Haefeld and Professor Berger. About five to six hundred attendees, mainly Germans from across the island, enjoyed a multi course dinner, toasts, and music by the Hawaiian band before midnight. A separate notice reports the Pioneer Building and Loan Association semi annual statement for the period ending December 31st, detailing receipts and disbursements and current financial position.
