On Maui a wave of labor unrest and a near clash with police erupted after a Chinese contractor faced assault allegations. A large Chinese labor group deserted work, retreated from Wailuku, and returned after assurances from local officials. Police and sheriffs confronted the crowd, fines were imposed, and tensions over contract labor regulations persisted.

Chas Burke a young stranger who arrived in the Amy Turner committed suicide by leaping from the steamer near Kawashee after handing $1000 in money and $6 in silver to Richly and dropping into the water. Burke was not seen again and nothing more is known of him. A Chinese man attempted suicide by jumping overboard on the Mani but was detected before he could act.
