Angry Maui tidal wave hits Kahului and Honolua wharf

Wailuku reports a powerful tidal wave on December 23, 1898. The Kahului wharf and the Honolua new wharf were washed away. Brig Consuelo and brigantine bravely endured the storm while freight was lost from a warehouse. A native home at Honokohau stood near the surf as villagers note this unprecedented reach. The Claudine heads to Lahaina then Honolulu. Maalaea bay remains calm.
