The city tightens control as a bubonic plague outbreak claims four lives and a native Hawaiian woman dies. Dr. Hoffman reviews cases, and Captain Ashley, Judge Wilcox, and Judge Cooper coordinate a strengthened cleanup. The Japan Sea HQ opens for disinfecting supplies and inspector training.
The Chamber of Commerce schedules a special meeting tomorrow to act on a Board of Health request for cooperation to maintain support for poorer residents in quarantined districts and to consider immediate purchases of supplies. Honolulu will see its first rapid transit with the Pacific Heights branch, opening April 15 1900. The two and a quarter mile line will run from Kalulan drive to upper Pacific Heights with 15 minute headways, fare five cents, night operation, and electric lighting along trolley poles every 100 feet.

The Oahu College corporation has decided to appoint W B Oleson to the presidency, succeeding Frank A Hosmer whose resignation takes effect at the end of the school year. Oleson, noted educator and citizen, previously led Kamehameha School for Boys and later taught in Massachusetts. Dr Benjamin Andrews of Brown University was considered but did not pursue the offer.
John A Hassinger Jr died at the family home in Honolulu after a lengthy typhoid fever fight. Born and raised in Honolulu he once worked for the Hawaiian Electric Company. Survived by his parents Mrs and Mr John A Hassinger and sister Mrs C J Falk. Funeral set for 3 o clock Sunday afternoon.
United States Senator Monroe L. Hayward died at 6 20 this morning after a stroke in August. He had been in a precarious condition since. A separate report notes the Chinen consul’s satisfaction with provisions for his countrymen in quarantine areas and mentions arrests of native women near a military hospital. The Chamber of Commerce plans a special meeting at 10 pm tomorrow with full member attendance urged.
