Mount Rainier Declared Highest Peak in United States

The Oregonian reports McAdie and Sierra Club members on Mount Rainier measured barometric readings suggesting Rainier is higher than Mount Whitney, with readings near 17,600 inches and about 17,633 to 17,676 inches. They seek corrections for gravity and vapor to finalize exact heights, noting Whitney at 14,015 feet and Rainier’s altitude around 14,028 to 14,521 feet per various surveys. The team observed dry air and low humidity at the summit, and the ascent by the three clubs was successful with no accidents.

Garden Island Comment on Governor Carter and Land Policy

In Lihue on August 28 the Garden Island voices cautious approval of Governor Carter as a changed man while criticizing meddling with matters beyond the biosphere. It commends Acting Governor Jack for land settlement work but argues homesteads of one to two acres are too small and questions inducement for residency.
