The Eko Hilo Tribune reports on a strange incident where the American flag vanished from the Executive building grounds. Suspects feared, investigations ongoing, and humor turned serious as questions on ownership and responsibility surface amid local military circles.
Two town youths, leaders of the Healani and Myrtle clubs, have agreed on a wager tied to a senior race. If the Myrtles win, the Healani whiskers are shorn. if the Healania win, the Myrtle wind ticklers quit the trade wind trade, with family ties keeping names out of it.
The Arizona was to have left San Francisco on the 20th inst two days after the Alliance departed. She should be in tonight or tomorrow as she is a fast boat.
Manila capitulated to American forces after a two hour bombardment by the Olympia Boston Monterey and Charleston. Casualties were light for the Americans but Spaniards suffered heavy losses. The surrender followed a failed demand for capitulation and a white flag raised at 1 30 PM. Subsequent dispatches outline terms, including disarmament and protection of Spanish lives and property, with questions left to Washington on troop movements and concessions.
The Alliance brought the Third Battalion of the New York Volunteers to port for drill in Kapiolani Park with officers including Captain Ferguson and Surgeon Major O. E. Davis. A Castle Club for passengers of the Castle and Castle Carrier ships was organized with Z. G. Kellogg as president and other officers. Captain Hubbard named an honorary member.
Last night around 10 near Kewaishao cemetery on Queen Street natives reported a man entering a nearby house. Detective Kanpa and officers surrounded the residence and pursued the thief who escaped but was later captured near the graveyard. The suspect turned out to be a police officer who was released when he appeared at the police station.
Deputy Marshal Hitchcock reports Molokai has one police officer who has not signed the US oath of allegiance, Kabanele of Moakea, with a deadline by month end to resign or be removed. A new plantation cane at Keunakakal is growing six feet since May 6 planting. Heavy rains hit Kamalo and Papukoo, while lower lands remain very wet.
The Koghebman resident of Fowler's yard was found collapsed this forenoon at the corner of Nuuaou and Merchant streets. He could barely move and asked to be taken to the hospital. A police officer carried him to a car for transport.
The Pall Mall Gazette condemns the German persistence in defending General Augusti and notes likeness to prior German sheltering of the Sultan during the Zan siber bombardment. It calls the Madla incident a flagrant neutrality breach and an international discourtesy likely to provoke reaction.
Miller hauls alongside Brewer's wharf to discharge cargo for this port and will not sail until about September 6. He has arranged to take George Greig and his family back to their home in Fanning Island. Greig is expected up from the Colonies on the next steamer. His family is there.
